Story 1 - Sci Fi Romance
Lingering around the corridor – she wondered why she hesitated so much. She has been here a number of times and met with far more important people than the one she was about to meet now. And yet – she was more nervous than she had ever been. Taking a deep breath, she went into the reception and handed over the small box she carried to the warm receptionist. Looking into the box, the receptionist smiled and said “It will take an hour mam, please wait in the waiting area. We have bill gates as our special guest today, you know the guy who made windows operating system. He was born in 1955 – you can spend the hour with him if you like”.
‘1955 – Almost 2000 years back’ she thought as she went into the waiting area – This would have excited her normally, history was her passion. Yet today, she was not in the mood to talk to anyone. She went into the silent zone and slept dreamlessly. She was woken up again by the receptionist with a warm smile – “Your guest is ready mam. Please follow me”. The nervousness came back in full force – her limbs refused to move. Forcing herself to get up, she followed the receptionist. As they passed through corridors, she wondered how easy it has become – to meet anyone in the world. All you need is a little part of them, their DNA. Cloning is the fad of the day. She had saved his nails when he had cut them in her place. She didn’t know it back then that she will meet him this way someday. Her memory went back to that day... Snap out! She chided her brain.
“Your guest is waiting inside mam” – The receptionist smiled and left. She checked her face in the mirror and adjusted the strand of hair hanging loose near the ear. She wanted to look perfect today. After a long pause, she went in. He was standing in the balcony looking outside - His silhouette completed the room, the surroundings and the world. She went and stood near him silently. “Jean!!”, he smiled.
“Mike” She replied, trying to keep her voice in control. She reminded herself that he only had memories until that day he cut his nails in her place – He doesn’t know what he did to me. He doesn’t know that he broke me. He doesn’t know that he cheated.
“You look beautiful” he said smiling.
“IS THAT WHY YOU LEFT? “ She wanted to scream. Instead, she smiled and said “So do you mike”. Her voice was tired. He could sense it.
“Is something wrong Jean?”
Everything was wrong. The world was wrong. The universe was wrong. He was wrong. The fact that she still loved him after what he did to her was wrong.
But nothing was wrong at that moment. He was with her and that made the world perfect. She smiled. “No Mike, I am just a little overwhelmed”
“Do you want to have some tea?” He asked and walked in to brew some tea without waiting for her response. She followed him – The hours went by as they talked lying in bed in each other’s arms – Random things, of life and death, of magic and history, of love and sex. She loved every minute of the day she spent with him and found herself falling in love with him all over again.
Time was running fast – she knew this cannot last forever. The cloning mechanism lasts only for 12 hours and then he would disintegrate into water. Normally, she would leave before that happened – Today she waited. As the twelfth hour came, she stood before him as he burst into water – There was no feeling inside her. But, she realized why she had come – She wanted to see him broken. The water trickled down her legs - A reminder of all the tears she had shed for him. She took one last look at the room, his disintegrating face and turned to walk away – She was free! At last!
