Why sexism is not a joke
*Normally, I would start these posts with a warning for people to not be offended - not today. If you do get offended - well, try being a little less narrow minded*
Last week's neeya naana show ignited a series of controversies in social media targeting a girl who stood up for her rights to drink. Yes, you heard me right. She has a "right" to decide whether or not to drink just as much as you do.
Surprisingly, the kind of reactions in social media has left me wondering how much double standards still exist even among the so called "educated and forward" section of the society.
One such post that left me blistering was this
The video openly supported domestic violence and drunken rape - And instead of condemning it, people appreciate, like and share the video in the name of a troll!
To all those who say, but girls drinking and wearing short dresses do spoil the culture - Culture is "the way of living of a group of people". Not a group of girls. Your actions are 'spoiling' your so called culture as much as the girl next to you. Are you really doing everything you can to uphold your culture? If you think drinking spoils culture - then it is true for both guys and girls drinking. If you think it spoils health - Again, it is true for both. There is no need for double standards here.
Before you start ranting about how we are misusing feminism for "bad" things and start posting stuff like the one below, let me clarify.
Guys in Pakistan think it is not right if a woman wants to study and be independent. You think it is not right if a woman wants to drink.
They use guns and violence to stop women from doing the things they don't think is right. You use public shaming.
What really makes you think that you are any different? - Because a girl drinking is bad for the society? Well, according to them a girl studying is bad for the society. You are both using your own ideas of right and wrong to dictate how others behave. Simple. Please don't consider yourselves above those guys!
And the worst part is, you are the same people who whined when porn was banned or when beef was banned. Don't you realize that it is all the same? Someone else deciding what is good for you or what is right for the society? - Why then, is a girl making such a statement creating so much of negativity?
To those who are going to point out the authenticity of the show - If it is not authentic, by all means boycott the show. Don't give them the TRP ratings. Troll the show. But, that doesn't justify your reactions about what was aired. Was your reactions only because guys got trolled? Because your "ego" got hurt? If so, you just proved how much of a chauvinist you really are.
To all those who say, it is just a joke - Sexism is not a joke, guys! Accepting sexist humor is indicating that sexism is a socially acceptable behavior. When a person can make a comment on drunken rape and get away with it so easily, of course it becomes okay to comment on other things. This is the reason why grooms can still ask "so when are you moving to my place". This is the reason why people can still show reluctance over having a lady manager. This is the reason why people can still make "because she is a woman" comments. Because, you show them that sexism is acceptable!
And finally, to those who say, Feminism is not about doing all the wrong things that guys do - No, it isn't. It is about voicing your opinion and not being judged because you are a "girl". Have you really honored that? Have you reacted the same way as you would have if a guy said these things? Have you acted without double standards? - Just something to think about.
P.S : Neither endorsing, nor criticizing drinking. Let the individuals decide for themselves.
